Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Pierced fretwork scroll borders: electroplate pattern work from the interwar years.
Curved central carry handle: fits tea-table serving pieces of the 1920s.
Light micro-scratching across the centre wells: honest domestic polishing over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Popularised during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras through to the 1920s, folding sandwich and cake stands were designed for formal afternoon tea service, providing a space-saving solution that collapsed flat when not in use.

These items were predominantly crafted from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or Britannia metal, featuring pierced fretwork, central loop handles, and hinged folding mechanisms.

Authentic pieces generally bear maker stamps such as EPNS, manufacturer trade marks, or patent numbers near the base or hinge mechanisms, alongside period-appropriate stamped or hand-cut fretwork patterns.

Beyond traditional tea service, these serving pieces can be placed on a sideboard or dining table to display delicate pastries, wrapped confectionery, or small decorative items.

Clean gently with a specialised silver polishing cloth or mild silver foam, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners that could strip the silver plating from the base metal beneath.
