The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These 17th-century Italian Baroque candlesticks take the form of a pair of large altar pieces shaped from solid walnut with a warm brown finish. Each piece displays a turned baluster stem with distinct stepped mouldings and a wide circular moulded base, topped with a central iron pricket spike for holding a candle. The timber shows visible grain patterns and signs of age-related marks across the turned surfaces. Each stick measures 80 cm high by 18 cm wide and 18 cm deep, providing a substantial presence for display. In a contemporary home, such candleholders suit placement upon a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or a formal dining room setting. The solid timber construction ensures stability while the classical profile coordinates with traditional and antique-led interior schemes. Maintenance involves simple dusting to preserve the natural walnut timber grain and the patinated finish accumulated over centuries.

FAQs

Italian Baroque pricket candlesticks are decorative candle holders developed during the seventeenth century, featuring turned wooden columns mounted with iron spikes to secure large tapers or church candles.

These items were typically lathe-turned from dense hardwoods such as walnut or chestnut and topped with hand-forged iron pricket spikes to support heavy wax pillars.

Authentic examples exhibit natural timber shrinkage along the grain, hand-turned profile variations between pairs, surface oxidisation on the iron spikes, and a deep patina built over centuries of wax application.

Position them as symmetrical accents on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to introduce architectural height, rich texture, and historical contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber patina, while keeping them away from direct heat sources to prevent wood splitting.
