This pair of antique Japanese Imari small plates, dating from 1890, comes in porcelain enriched with enamel and gold leaf. Each round plate displays a scalloped rim, an underglaze cobalt blue central floral medallion, and iron-red and gilt outer panels decorated with hand-painted flowers, leaves, scrolls, and animals in red, blue, white, green, and gold colours. Signs of age appear in the traditional hand-painted finish and intricate multi-panelled borders. The plates measure 3.5 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, the plates add distinct decorative detail to a dining room or living space. They suit display alongside other porcelain or as standalone decorative items within a traditional or eclectic interior.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and was exported to Europe primarily via the port of Imari from the seventeenth century onwards. The style gained immense popularity during the Edo and Meiji periods for its distinct color palette and intricate hand-painted designs.

Imari plates are made from kaolin-rich porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. Decoration typically features underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gold leaf detailing applied during subsequent kilnings.

Authentic pieces generally display characteristic underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red palettes, subtle firing imperfections, spur marks on the base, and evidence of hand-applied gilding. The rim often displays a lobed or scalloped edge with paneled decorative layouts.

Imari plates can be displayed upright on brass stands across sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside open shelving. They also make effective wall displays when grouped together in symmetry above accent furniture.

Hand wash gently using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical cleaners, or dishwashers, as these will erode the delicate overglaze enamels and gold leafing over time.
