Arts and Crafts furniture emerged in the late 19th century as a response to industrial mass production, emphasising handcrafted joinery, clean functional lines, and honest use of natural materials such as solid oak.

Solid European oak was the predominant timber, often finished with wax to highlight natural grain patterns, alongside exposed mortise and tenon joinery and shaped cut-out end panels.

Authentic pieces typically feature visible traditional joinery, straight structural forms, quarter-sawn oak figure, and functional architectural silhouettes free from excessive applied ornament.

Position the piece against a neutral painted wall to highlight the timber tones, pairing the shelves with a mix of hardback books, studio ceramics, and minimal decorative objects.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually, taking care to position the item away from direct radiators or damp walls.
