This unusual nineteenth-century Swedish silver and black onyx brooch in a Victorian and Gothic style comprises twin roundels joined in a double silver frame with multi-claw settings. The piece presents facet-cut black onyx cabochons in deep black, held by small silver claws along the perimeter of each round mount. Surface wear is visible across the dark stone surfaces, showing minor scuffs and marks alongside the polished metallic finish. The brooch measures 2.2 cm high, 4.4 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. This antique jewellery item is suited for personal wear today, attaching securely to garments as a statement accessory. The portable scale makes it an adaptable addition to a collection of historic adornments or everyday outfits, drawing upon traditional Scandinavian craft from Stockholm dated 1898.

During the nineteenth century, Swedish silversmiths produced jewellery heavily influenced by European mourning customs and traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship. Black onyx set in silver became popular across Europe during this period for both formal attire and sentiment-driven fashion.

These brooches typically feature hand-cut black onyx, jet, or French glass set into silver, sterling silver, or silver-gilt frames. The stones were held using multi-prong claw settings or decorative bezel mounts.

Authentic pieces usually feature Swedish hallmarks, such as the three crowns mark, town marks, date letters, or makers marks. Additionally, period C-clasps, elongated pin stems, and hand-faceted stone cuts indicate original construction.

A silver and onyx brooch can be pinned to the lapel of a tailored blazer, fastened onto a silk scarf, or mounted on a velvet ribbon as a choker. Smaller antique jewellery pieces can also be displayed on fabric cushions inside glass-topped collector cases.

Silver frames should be gently polished with a soft, untreated microfiber cloth to remove oxidisation without abrading the metal. Avoid submerging gemstones in chemical dips or ultrasonic cleaners, and store the piece in a dry, cloth-lined jewellery box away from moisture.
