18th century
Description

Chinese Armorial Porcelain Plate with the Arms of Highmore, Yongzheng Period, c.1735

Price: £595.00 – UK Delivery Included

Rare 18th-Century Chinese Armorial Plate, circa 1735

Offered for sale is a fine Chinese armorial porcelain plate bearing the Arms of Highmore, dating to the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, circa 1735. This attractive early 18th-century export porcelain piece is decorated in grisaille, iron red, gold and blue enamels, creating a distinctive and richly coloured heraldic design.

Chinese armorial porcelain was commissioned for European patrons and families, combining Chinese porcelain craftsmanship with Western heraldic designs. Examples bearing identifiable family arms are of particular interest to collectors of Chinese export porcelain, antique armorial ceramics and Georgian-period decorative arts.

A teapot decorated with the identical Highmore coat of arms is illustrated in David Santuary Howard's Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Volume II, page 159, reference E5, providing a useful published reference for this armorial design.

Condition

The plate is in excellent, unrestored condition. It has two very slight flakes to the reverse of the rim, as shown in the photographs. There is no other damage, and the enamelling remains strong, bright and attractive.

A particularly appealing example of early Chinese armorial export porcelain, with a distinctive decorative palette and a documented association with a published reference to the Highmore arms.

This Chinese export porcelain plate dates to the Yongzheng period of the 18th century. It is round in shape with an off-white glaze finished with grisaille, iron-red, gold, and blue enamels. The central well displays a heraldic crest in red and grey surrounded by elaborate red mantling, a helmet, and spears, while a geometric diaper pattern frames the inner border and floral sprigs decorate the wide outer rim. Two slight flakes appear on the reverse of the rim, and the enamelling remains strong and bright across the surface. Measuring 23 cm in diameter, this decorative plate suits display on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space. It forms a useful addition to a collection of antique ceramics, Georgian decorative arts, or Chinese export porcelain. The piece can sit on a decorative stand or rest flat as part of a traditional tabletop display, offering a clear link to historical European heraldic commissions executed in East Asia.

Chinese armorial porcelain refers to custom-ordered ceramic wares produced in China during the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, painted with European coats of arms for aristocratic and wealthy clients.

It was crafted from kaolin clay and petuntse fired at high temperatures to create a hard-paste body, then decorated with hand-painted overglaze enamels and gold leaf detail.

Authentic Yongzheng period export pieces typically exhibit thin hard-paste porcelain, delicate enamel painting, intricate diaper borders, and subtle wear patterns to the foot rim.

Armorial plates can be displayed on brass stands atop sideboards, arranged inside glazed cabinets, or hung in symmetrical gallery wall groupings to add historic interest.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive liquid soap, avoiding chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or immersion in hot water to protect vulnerable gilding and overglaze enamels.
