This George V sterling silver sugar basket originates from the 1920s in an English country house style. The piece comprises a vase-shaped wirework frame supporting a removable amethyst glass liner, a circular pedestal foot, and an articulated twisted swing handle with a wavy gadroon border. Cast vine leaves and floral motifs adorn the openwork silver body alongside hallmarks on the metal. The object stands 11.5 cm in height with a 7 cm rim diameter and a 5 cm foot diameter. Placed on a sideboard top, it serves as a functional display vessel or serving piece within a traditional interior setting.

Silver sugar baskets emerged during the mid-to-late eighteenth century in Britain as refined sugar became more accessible. They were designed to hold crushed sugar loaves or sweetmeats, often featuring openwork or wirework frames paired with blue or ruby glass liners to protect the metal from acidity and display contrasting colour.

These pieces typically consist of a solid sterling silver frame, often featuring pierced, cast, or wirework construction, accompanied by a hand-blown coloured glass liner, such as cobalt blue, ruby red, or amethyst purple.

Authentic British sterling silver from the 1920s carries a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal: the makers mark, the lion passant for sterling purity, the town mark (such as a leopards head for London), and a specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

A silver sugar basket with a coloured glass liner functions as a decorative accent on a dining table, sideboard, or tray. It can serve as an ornamental catch-all, a container for small items, or as an isolated display piece in a glass cabinet.

Clean the silver frame gently using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and specialist silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals. The glass liner should be removed and washed separately in warm, soapy water before thoroughly drying prior to reassembly.
