This nineteenth-century Chinese export silver toothpick holder stands 6 cm tall with a 3 cm base diameter. Made by Wing Nam and Company in Hong Kong around 1890, the piece has a silver colour and a bright metallic finish. The quatrefoil-shaped body contains distinct panels embossed with repousse bamboo, peonies, and prunus flowers, set against a finely textured, chased background. A lobed rim tops the cup, which rests upon a smooth, slender stem and a circular pedestal foot. Stamped maker hallmarks, including the initials WN and Chinese characters, appear clearly along the foot rim. Ideal for placement on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room, this toothpick holder serves as a decorative tableware item. The item shows very good condition overall, maintaining crisp relief details across all four botanical panels and a polished reflective surface on the pedestal base. It functions today as a small display piece or desk accessory, bringing period craftsmanship into a contemporary home.

Chinese Export Silver refers to silverware crafted in China from the late 18th to mid-20th centuries specifically for export to Western markets, blending traditional Chinese decorative motifs with Western functional tableware forms.

These pieces were typically crafted from high-grade silver, utilising hand-chasing and repousse techniques to create detailed raised relief patterns such as bamboo foliage, dragons, or floral motifs on structural forms.

Authentic items generally feature artisan character marks alongside Western silversmith initials or shop stamps punched into the foot or rim, paired with hand-hammered repousse decoration typical of Cantonese and Shanghai workshops.

A small silver vessel functions as a refined tabletop accent, suitable for placement on a sideboard, desk, or bar tray to hold small items such as cocktail picks or matches.

Maintain the surface by wiping gently with a soft cotton cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals that could wear down delicate relief details or natural oxidisation in carved recesses.
