Antique English Silver Plated Wine Cooler / Champagne Bucket C.1870

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A most unusual and scarce wine cooler or Champagne bucket dating to the mid to late Victorian era.

The body features a classic high-relief "Abercorn" or quilted diamond motif, punctuated by repeating stamped floral rosettes inside each diamond grid. This heavy, geometric embossing was exceptionally popular in Britain during the high Victorian era.

The rim boasts an openwork, pierced "card-cut" or castle-style gallery border decorated with delicate beaded wiring. This structural fringe acts as a visual frame for the bucket when filled with ice.

The vessel sits on a flared, pedestal-style foot adorned with a matching repeating diamond pattern, lending it the imposing architectural presence of a traditional ceremonial chalice.

The front features an unengraved, scroll-bordered cartouche (shield). This blank central reserve was designed specifically for a family crest, monogram, or celebratory inscription.

The piece is unmarked, unusual for such a stylish and unique piece. There is an old repair seen from the inside where some solder can be seen, mentioned and shown for accuracy.

Very good antique condition measuring 9 1/4" in diameter x 10" tall.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Quilted diamond pattern with rosettes: high Victorian relief metalwork.
Pierced fringe border below a beaded rim: late nineteenth-century decorative styling.
Blank scrolled cartouche on the front: Victorian vessel designed for bespoke engraving.
Dark oxidisation within the deep relief: natural aging on Victorian electroplate.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian silver-plated wine cooler or champagne bucket dates from around 1870. The vessel shows a high-relief quilted diamond diaper pattern with stamped floral rosettes inside each grid, an openwork castle-style gallery border with beaded wiring at the rim, and a flared pedestal foot with a matching diamond pattern. An unengraved scroll-bordered cartouche sits on the front. Through a central cut-out in the patterned body, a blue fabric lining is visible inside the vessel, and a small area of interior solder shows an old repair. Measuring 25.4 cm high by 23.5 cm wide and deep, the piece weighs solidly and carries the architectural presence of a traditional ceremonial chalice. Placed on a sideboard top in an English country house dining room or living space, the bucket functions as a striking display container or wine cooler for entertaining guests. The unengraved shield offers space for a custom family crest or monogram, while the bright silver finish and intricate geometric embossing create a dramatic visual statement on a surface.

Wine coolers became prominent dining accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries to maintain chilled temperatures for bottled wines at the table. The development of electroplating in the mid-19th century allowed for detailed ornamentation on base metals, rendering these decorative serving vessels widely accessible.

Victorian wine coolers were commonly crafted from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver (EPNS). The construction often featured hand-chased or embossed relief decoration over a solid nickel or copper base.

Authentic pieces from this period typically bear electroplate makers marks, stamped initials such as EPNS or EPBM, or Victorian registration marks. Natural wear showing the underlying base metal, known as bleeding, often appears on high points.

A silver-plated cooler can be used as a dining table centrepiece, placed on a sideboard for entertaining, or repurposed as a decorative urn for floral arrangements. Its metallic finish complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Clean gently with warm water and mild liquid dish soap, drying thoroughly with a soft cloth. Apply specialist silver polish sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth to prevent stripping the thin outer layer of silver plate.
