This 19th-century Victorian freestanding kidney-shaped desk comes from the renowned London maker T H Filmer and Sons, operating near Berners Street. The piece is constructed from warm brown burr walnut veneer with book-matched curved sides, complemented by a dark leather inset top surrounded by cross-grained cushion moulding. Small turned wooden knobs adorn the multiple drawers across the dual pedestals and frieze, while keyhole escutcheons punctuate the upper tier. The design includes a plinth with cavetto moulding, flanked pilasters, and a locking mechanism resembling a Wellington chest. Measuring 76 cm high, 137 cm wide and 64 cm deep, the desk functions as a practical workspace or statement writing table in a gentleman's library or executive study. It retains its original pressed brass maker label and rests on Copes patterned ceramic castors in untouched condition.

A kidney-shaped desk features a gentle inward curve on the user side, designed to allow easier access to the work surface and drawers. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these desks often feature finished backs, allowing them to stand freely in the centre of a room.

Craftsmen typically utilised high-grade burr walnut veneers applied over solid timber carcases, paired with hand-cut dovetail joints. Tops were frequently inlaid with gold-tooled or blind-stamped leather writing surfaces, accented by turned wooden or brass drawer pulls.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers, natural age-related shrinkage lines in the veneer, and period lock mechanisms. Additionally, true freestanding models display matching quality burr walnut veneer across the reverse panel.

Position the desk centrally in a home office or library to showcase its curved silhouette and finished reverse side. Pair it with a contemporary task chair and minimal desk accessories to create a balanced contrast between period cabinetmaking and modern design.

Keep the desk away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Dust regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain, and use a dedicated leather conditioner for the inset writing surface.
