Large Victorian Silver Plate and Gilded Champagne Bottle Coaster C1880

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A superb late 19th-century silver-plated and gilded Champagne bottle coaster dating to c.1880.

It has a turned hardwood base enclosed within a silver-plated body with a richly gilded pierced border of repeating geometric design. The upper rim is beautifully cast and decorated with vine leaves, bunches of grapes and scrolling tendrils, the lower section fully gilded and pierced. The underside retains its original velvet covering.

The generous proportions suggest it was designed to accommodate a Champagne bottle, protecting polished dining tables whilst providing an elegant presentation at the Victorian dinner table. The vine leaf and grape decoration is particularly appropriate, symbolising the wine it was intended to accompany and reflecting the Victorian taste for richly ornamented tableware inspired by nature.

Pierced geometric lattice on the collar: stamped sheet metalwork.
Turned hardwood base with concentric rings: traditional late Victorian coaster construction.
Central inset metal boss: designed to protect the wood from bottle pontil marks.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian champagne bottle coaster dates to c1880 during the period of Queen Victoria. The piece comprises a turned hardwood base with a moulded base ring, enclosed within a silver-plated and gilded metal body with a scalloped rim and a pierced lattice gallery. The upper rim displays a cast decoration of vine leaves, bunches of grapes, and scrolling tendrils, while the lower section is fully gilded and pierced. The underside retains its original velvet covering. The object measures 8.5 cm in height and 14.5 cm in diameter. In a modern home, this bottle coaster serves as a practical table accessory on a sideboard top or dining table, protecting polished surfaces while holding a standard bottle. The gold and warm timber tones complement traditional and English country house interiors.

A bottle coaster is a shallow tray designed to hold wine or champagne bottles and catch drips to protect timber table surfaces. These accessories became widespread in the late 18th century and evolved through the Victorian era into decorative silver and gilded table appointments.

Victorian bottle coasters were commonly crafted from electroplated silver or gilded metals featuring pierced lattice galleries, combined with turned mahogany or rosewood bases lined with protective felt or baize on the underside.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature turned wooden bases, hand-pierced or cast metal galleries, and makers or registration marks stamped near the rim or lower moulded edge.

Place the coaster on a dining sideboard, drinks trolley, or central dining table to hold decanters, champagne bottles, or small table items as a decorative metallic accent.

Wipe the metal section gently with a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver or metal polish, taking care to avoid soaking the item to prevent moisture from damaging the wooden base and felt backing.
