This Victorian band ring dates to 1897 and originates from Chester, incorporating a 9ct yellow gold construction with a polished, shiny finish. The design comprises a wide plain band measuring 5.26mm wide and a suspended heart-shaped padlock charm measuring 1.2cm x 1.0cm. The padlock displays a keyhole detail and four small screw heads around the centre, accompanied by a full set of hallmarks on the band including L&W, Chester, 9, 375, and date letter O for 1897. The piece weighs 3.81 grams and exhibits a tiny dent at the back of the padlock charm. Padlock charms of this style date back to the Victorian period when they were worn by women whose significant others were away for extended periods. Today, this collectable ring serves as a wearable antique and makes a thoughtful gift for a loved one. The piece fits a UK ring size S 1/2 or US size 9.25, and works well as a standalone statement piece for daily wear or special occasions. The warm yellow gold tone and romantic symbolism lend character to any modern jewellery collection, while the scarce padlock ring format provides a distinct historical talking point.

Heart padlocks became popular in Victorian jewellery during the nineteenth century as symbols of love, devotion, and romantic attachment. Often given as tokens of affection or engagement, the lock motif represented safeguarding the heart of the wearer or giver.

Late Victorian 9ct gold pieces produced in Great Britain were officially stamped by regional assay offices such as Chester, Birmingham, or London. Hallmarks typically included the crown or carat mark (9 and .375), the assay office mark, and a date letter indicating the exact year of manufacture.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct British assay office hallmarks stamped inside the band or on the charm. Original Victorian examples exhibit hand-crafted construction, subtle wear patterns consistent with age, and precise keyhole or screwhead engraving details.

Victorian gold band rings can be worn individually as a focal piece or stacked alongside slim modern gold bands. The drop charm design adds movement and texture when layered with other antique or contemporary yellow gold rings.

Clean yellow gold jewellery gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth to avoid scratching the metal. Inspect the jump rings and attachments periodically to ensure suspended charms remain securely fastened.
