This Edwardian pocket watch-style locket pendant is made from rosy nine-carat gold and hallmarked for Chester 1907 with the maker initials WHC. The circular frame is finished with a polished golden sheen and has a screw top bezel fitted to an ornate scroll bail, enclosing a sepia photograph of a young girl under glass. Little dents and marks show across the body, while the reverse holds partially legible pencil handwriting. Measuring 3.3 x 4.3 cm including the bail and weighing 3.6 g, the top unscrews to allow the insertion of personal keepsakes. Today, this piece serves as a wearable personal keepsake or can be displayed as a portable framed heirloom on a dressing table or inside a cabinet. It connects directly with historical portrait traditions and offers a functional compartment for small sentimental photographs or notes in a domestic setting.

Edwardian lockets, produced between 1901 and 1910, frequently featured delicate scrollwork motifs, light metalwork frames, and functional mechanisms such as screw tops or glass bezels to secure portrait photographs.

Craftsmen predominantly used 9ct, 15ct, or 18ct yellow gold paired with glass panels or rock crystal covers to enclose photographs, hair mementos, or miniature paintings.

Authentic examples often feature British hallmarks indicating gold purity and manufacture year, alongside specific structural characteristics like ornate scroll bails and threaded screw bezels.

An antique photo locket can be suspended from a modern or vintage gold chain as an individual neckpiece, or layered alongside chains of varying lengths and textures.

Gold surfaces should be gently wiped with a soft microfibre cloth, keeping the locket dry to prevent moisture from penetrating the frame and damaging the internal photograph.
