A coal purdonium is a decorative wooden cabinet or box with a sloped drop-front opening, designed in the nineteenth century to store coal discreetly beside a domestic fireplace.

Victorian coal boxes were frequently crafted from hardwoods such as rosewood, oak, or mahogany, often featuring marquetry inlays, cast brass handles, and a removable metal interior liner.

Authentic nineteenth-century coal purdoniums display hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate brass fittings with natural patina, wear along internal resting points, and natural wood oxidation.

An antique coal box can be placed beside a contemporary hearth to hold kindling and logs, or re-purposed as discrete storage for household objects in a living room.

To preserve rosewood and brass fittings, position the item away from direct radiators, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply natural beeswax sparingly to protect the timber finish.
