Antique 19th Century Walnut Pedestal Desk | Black Leather Top

19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique late 19th century pedestal desk in walnut, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship from around the turn of the century.

The desk is fitted with nine drawers in total: three frieze drawers across the top, with a central drawer over the kneehole, and a bank of three graduated drawers in each pedestal. Every drawer has a keyhole and decorative pierced brass handles, providing a wealth of practical storage.

The top is set with a black leather writing surface within a moulded walnut border. The drawers have panelled fronts framed by reeded uprights, the sides and back are panelled, and each pedestal stands on a moulded plinth base with castors.

The walnut displays an attractive straight grain and a warm, mellow colour with a lovely aged patina.

The desk comes apart in three sections, the top and two pedestals, which makes delivery and access much easier. Presented in good condition, with some wear to the plinth bases in keeping with its age. A very desirable pedestal desk, perfect for a study, home office or library.

FAQs

A pedestal desk consists of a flat top resting upon two vertical pedestals containing drawers, leaving an open kneehole in the centre. Originating in 18th-century England, this style became the standard executive writing desk format throughout the 19th century.

These desks were commonly built using solid woods and veneers such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often features hand-cut dovetail joints, brass drop handles, and inset gilded leather writing surfaces on the desktop.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate indicators such as hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass locks or handles with natural oxidisation, and three-section modular construction where the top lifts off the pedestals.

Position the desk centrally in a home study or against a neutral backdrop, paired with modern task lighting and streamlined seating to create a balanced contrast between traditional craft and contemporary lines.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or fading. Clean the timber with specialized beeswax polish and treat the leather inset with a leather conditioner to avoid cracking.
