This Victorian walnut pedestal desk brings a warm brown tone to a gentleman's library or study space. The piece measures 73.5 cm high, 106.5 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep, providing a compact yet functional writing surface. A maroon tooled royal commemorative leather inset tops the surface, complemented by nine individual drawers arranged in a traditional pedestal layout. Each drawer is fitted with decorative brass drop handles and secure keyholes, while the structure rests upon simple plinth bases. Practical for everyday study work or home administration, the desk stands freely in a room and offers generous storage across its pedestals. The walnut construction displays natural wood grain patterns throughout the polished surfaces, showing authentic age and daily use marks consistent with period furniture. The rectangular top moulding frames the leather insert neatly, making this a classic addition to a home office or period-styled interior.

FAQs

Victorian pedestal desks are characterised by two freestanding columns of drawers supporting a central writing top. They typically feature solid wood or veneer construction, brass fittings, and a leather or cloth inset writing surface.

Craftsmen primarily utilised woods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak, paired with brass drop handles or swan-neck pulls. Writing surfaces were frequently inlaid with gold-tooled animal hide leather.

Authentic Victorian examples usually feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass locks, stamped maker marks or serial numbers, and natural patination across the timber surfaces.

A Victorian pedestal desk can serve as an anchor piece in a contemporary home office when paired with modern task lighting and clean, neutral wall tones.

Keep the timber nourished using a quality natural beeswax polish applied along the grain, and treat the leather inset with specialised leather balsam to prevent drying and cracking.
