Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of four antique Japanese Imari decorative plates dates from 1900 and displays the traditional Japanese Imari style. Formed from porcelain with an enamel finish, the plates exhibit a vibrant colour palette of cobalt blue, iron-red, white, green and gold. Each round plate features detailed hand-painted decoration, comprising a central foliate roundel enclosing birds, surrounded by iron-red panels, cobalt blue reserves, floral motifs, scrolls and patterned borders. The visual elements include visible gold highlights, painted green leaf details and a glossy white glaze ground. Each individual plate measures 3 cm high, 18.5 cm wide and 18.5 cm deep. They function well on a sideboard top or as display pieces within an English Country House interior today.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported from the port of Imari. Originating in the seventeenth century, the style is characterised by rich decoration using cobalt blue underglaze and iron-red overglaze enamels.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The hand-painted designs combine underglaze cobalt blue pigment with overglaze enamels in iron red, green, and occasionally gold gilding.

Authentic Imari pieces feature hand-painted variations in design, a palette of cobalt blue and iron red, and slight natural irregularities in the glaze. The foot rim often shows unglazed porcelain or spur marks from kiln firing.

Imari plates can be displayed upright on plate stands along a sideboard top, arranged as a wall plate gallery, or placed inside a glazed display cabinet to introduce historical texture and rich colour accents.

Clean porcelain plates gentle by hand using tepid water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive cloths. Do not submerge enamel-decorated pieces in hot water or place them in dishwashers, as heat can degrade overglaze detailing.
