This late Victorian or Edwardian silverplated wine bottle holder, dating to 1900, is a stylish piece from maker Harrison Bros. & Howson. The design incorporates a circular silverplated base with a simple lower moulding, an upright stand curving gracefully into a shepherd's crook shape, a movable circular ring attached near the apex, and an elongated loop handle at the very top. The metallic finish has a bright silver tone with smooth curved surfaces throughout the structure. The holder measures 32 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, with a base proportioned to hold standard wine bottle widths. In a contemporary home, this item serves as a functional bottle carrier or tabletop accessory for dinner parties, wine tastings, or bar displays. A bottle is positioned upright inside the base collar and secured by passing the upper loop over the neck, with the ring resting near the curved neck of the stand for ease of handling. The piece sits steadily on a flat surface, offering a practical way to pour wine at the dining table while adding a distinctive period accent to an interior.

A wine cradle is designed to hold a bottle at an inclined angle during table service. This position keeps sediment settled at the bottom of matured wines while allowing poured serving without resting the bottle flat on the table surface.

Most historical wine bottle cradles were constructed from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), sterling silver, or brass with silver plating. These items frequently incorporate solid cast wireframes or stamped metal bases to provide steady weight distribution.

Authentic period pieces usually feature makers marks or electroplate stamps such as EPNS or EPBM near the base or rim. Visible wear around stress points revealing the underlying base metal, alongside period-appropriate joining techniques like hard soldering, also indicates age.

Place the cradle on a dining room sideboard, bar cart, or drinks tray alongside crystal glassware and decanters. Its metallic surface provides visual structure and acts as a functional centrepiece during formal meal gatherings.

Clean silver-plated items using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to prevent removing the silver layer over time. Wash off liquid spills promptly with mild soapy water, drying thoroughly to prevent tarnish and water spotting.
