This Chinese export silver miniature pin cushion takes the form of a traditional slipper dating to the Qing Dynasty period around 1900. Fashioned from solid silver with a bright metallic finish, the piece features detailed chased bat motifs alongside heavily textured surface work and fine engraved detailing across the curved toe and side panels. Hallmarked with the word silver and accompanying Chinese character marks, the metal shows clean lines with no visible dings, splits, or repairs. Measuring 7 cm long by 2.6 cm wide and 2.2 cm tall, this portable novelty item works well as a decorative accessory displayed on a bookshelf or desk within a home. The compact scale allows it to sit easily among small collectables, curiosities or vanity items while serving its original function as a pin cushion.

Chinese export silver refers to silver items crafted in China between the late eighteenth and mid-twentieth centuries specifically for export to Western markets, often combining traditional Chinese motifs with Western functional forms.

These items were typically constructed from high-grade silver, utilising techniques such as repousse, chasing, hand-engraving, and casting, often lined with fabric or velvet to hold sewing pins.

Authentic pieces frequently bear makers marks in Chinese characters alongside character or artisan stamps, pseudo-hallmarks, or purity marks such as 90 or SILVER.

Miniature silver novelties can be displayed inside glass cloches, styled on bookshelf stacks, or arranged within a cabinet of curiosities alongside other small decorative antiques.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that can remove intentional patination within chased areas or damage internal velvet linings.
