This small 19th-century French escritoire displays a Louis XV style form in warm brown kingwood with intricate floral marquetry inlay across the fall front and top. The piece includes a brass gallery top, concave shaped frieze, canted ends with bronze mounts, and slender cabriole legs terminating in ormolu sabots. Detailed hardware features ornate metal escutcheons and handles on the exterior drawers, complementing the overall marquetry decoration. The timber exhibits a rich patina with visible grain patterns across all visible surfaces. Measuring 130 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 36 cm deep, this desk functions as a practical writing surface or decorative display stand in a study, drawing room, or bedroom. The fall front opens for desk use, while the single lower drawer and upper surface provide additional utility.

An escritoire is a specialised type of small writing cabinet or bureau that originated in France during the 17th century. Designed primarily for writing letters and housing stationery, these pieces typically feature a fall-front desk flap that opens to reveal internal drawers and compartments.

High-grade pieces were crafted using exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, and rosewood laid over an oak or pine carcass. Construction often integrated floral or geometric marquetry inlays, decorative brass top galleries, and cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts on the legs and corners.

Louis XV style furniture is identified by asymmetrical curves, slender cabriole legs, serpentine outlines, and naturalistic motifs such as floral sprays or basket designs in marquetry. Authentic examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-chased metal mounts, and fine book-matched wood veneers.

A compact escritoire functions as a focal point in an entryway, formal drawing room, or bedroom reading corner. Its vertical proportions allow it to sit comfortably in smaller spaces while providing concealed storage for writing tools or electronic tablets.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and applying a microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the wood. Avoid direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting, and clean metal mounts using a dry soft brush without harsh chemical polish.
