19th century
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

An extremely fine and unusual French Amboyan and gilt bronze bureau plat - writing table inspired by the Neoclassical designs.

French circa 1880-1900.

A superb amboyna writing desk having distinctive ormolu mounts to the frieze shares some of the best characteristics seen in the French Empire and British Regency periods, including which is rarely seen in furniture of the period the tapering to the square legs being confined to only three sides.

With inlaid ebonised banding, the gilt tooled leather inset top with a conforming pair of inset lateral slides, enclosed by a gilt bronze moulded surround with a diaper-filled lozenge panel design. The frieze with three drawers together with urn and oil lamp shaped mounts, conforming to the rear, the short side friezes with swag mounted medallions having drapery and trophy motifs, raised on tapered square legs surmounted by anthemion inlay and ending in ormolu cappings.

This bureau plat - writing table is of exhibition quality with the finest cuts of amboyna used along with extremely delicate gilt bronze mounts, a very fine example.

This nineteenth-century French Neoclassical writing table is constructed from warm brown amboyna wood with gilt bronze mounts and an inset leather top. It stands upon square tapered legs with ormolu cappings, accented by palmette marquetry, ebonised banding, and ormolu handles shaped like urns and oil lamps. The frieze contains three drawers, complemented by a gilt bronze moulded surround and distinctive mounts. Measuring 76 cm high, 131 cm wide and 72 cm deep, it provides a functional writing surface for a study, home office, or living room. Placed in a modern interior, this piece serves as a sophisticated centre desk or workspace against a wall, combining classical elegance with practical storage for day-to-day writing and administrative tasks.

French Neoclassical furniture from the 19th century is defined by symmetrical forms, straight geometric lines, and decorative motifs inspired by classical antiquity, such as palmettes, wreaths, and tapered legs.

These writing tables frequently utilise dense timber veneers such as amboyna or mahogany, complemented by chased gilt bronze mounts and inset leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces feature finely cast bronze mounts with hand-chiselled details, subtle oxidisation in recessed areas, and hand-cut veneer work displaying slight natural irregularities consistent with period craftsmanship.

Positioning a Neoclassical desk as a focal point in a contemporary study or open-plan room creates contrast, pairing structured historic woodwork alongside minimal lighting and modern seating.

Dust amboyna veneers regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly; avoid chemical cleaners on gilt bronze mounts to protect the original gilded surface and natural patina.
