Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French roll-top desk dates to the 1920 period, styled in the Louis XVI manner. The piece is constructed from kingwood with exotic fruitwood marquetry inlay in warm brown tones, complemented by original, well-cast ormolu fixtures, a pierced brass gallery along the top edge, and swept cabriole legs terminating in metal sabots. The tambour front features elaborate fan-shaped decorative wood inlays and a central brass keyhole escutcheon. Below the roll-top section, the apron contains three small drawers fitted with ornate cast-metal pull handles, matching the single drawer fronts positioned on either side above the curved legs. The entire structure stands 127 cm high, 124 cm wide, and 71 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a home study or living room as a functional workspace, this bureau opens to reveal internal compartments and a pull-out writing surface.

FAQs

A bureau a cylindre, or cylinder desk, is a writing desk developed in 18th-century France featuring a curved quarter-cylinder wooden lid that rotates open to reveal internal drawers and a writing surface.

These pieces typically feature fine wood veneers such as walnut, kingwood, or rosewood arranged in intricate marquetry patterns, complemented by cast brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and gallery rails.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut joinery, hand-carved dovetails, genuine marquetry veneer, hand-chased brass mounts, and natural oxidisation on the underside and drawer interiors.

Place the desk against a neutral or rich dark feature wall as a statement accent piece, pairing it with clean-lined contemporary lighting or simple modern seating to balance the ornate woodwork.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber, while avoiding chemical metal cleaners on gilded brass mounts to prevent surface damage.
