This Victorian double size brass bedstead dates from 1890 in the English Country House style. The piece comprises a tubular brass frame with curved top corners, square block feet at the base of the uprights, and woven brass wire mesh panels set into both the headboard and the footboard. Cast brass bell flowers and foliate festoon swags decorate the upper and lower sections of the mesh inserts, joined by vertical support bars and small turned finials along the top rails. The warm brass metalwork shows typical signs of age and unrestored patina across the surface. Measuring 137 cm high by 137 cm wide and 214 cm deep, the frame accepts a standard 4ft6 by 6ft3 mattress. The bed serves as a central sleeping platform positioned in a master bedroom or guest suite, offering a traditional focal point for interior arrangements.

Victorian brass bedsteads are metal bed frames manufactured during the reign of Queen Victoria, characterised by tubular brass construction, decorative cast fittings, and often intricate mesh panels or cast iron framing.

These beds typically feature hollow brass tubing mounted over iron cores for structural stability, accompanied by cast brass or iron joints, decorative brass mounts, and occasionally woven steel or brass mesh panels.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast iron corner joints (dovetail joints), threaded iron rods inside the tubing, natural oxidisation on unlacquered metal, and hand-cast decorative embellishments rather than lightweight modern stampings.

Pair the warm metallic tones with crisp white linen bedding, neutral wall shades, and modern muted textiles to allow the detailed metalwork and silhouette to serve as the structural anchor of the bedroom.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can remove natural patina or damage lacquered coatings; unlacquered brass may be gently maintained with a dedicated metal polish.
