Antique Pine Beds

A pine bedstead is a frame in softwood or pitch pine, made in quantity as the painted or scrubbed alternative to hardwood beds for cottages, servants' rooms and children.

Introduction

Antique Pine Beds

Frames and bedsteads in pine, sold as complete beds or, now and then, as bed ends without side rails. Widths run from small children's cot beds through singles and 3/4 sizes to doubles, and matched pairs of singles turn up throughout.

One form dominates: the scroll-ended sleigh bed, or lit bateau, with both ends curling outward. Of 40 listings on Sellingantiques, 23 titles say "sleigh" and 15 say "single", so a single-width pine sleigh bed is what you'll meet most often. "French" appears in 14 titles, and the French, rustic and sleigh labels describe much the same group from different angles. The scroll-ended shape came out of early 19th-century French taste and was still being made in provincial pine long after.

Dating is broad. Only 18 of the 40 carry a clean year, and those run from 1890 to 1930; the rest sit under shelf-labels such as "19th Century" or "Victorian", with one title hedging as "Late 19th Century, C.1900". A pair of painted pine bed ends of circa 1830 is the earliest thing in the archive by some distance.

Beyond the sleigh group, pitch pine is named separately in six titles, covering singles, a 3/4 bed, a double and a dog bed. Faux bamboo turning shows up on two pieces. Sizes are given in words rather than measurements, so "small", "large", "3/4" and "small double" do the work that figures usually would.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Sits

Pairs and width set the top of the range. Matched pairs of French sleigh beds and pairs of Arts and Crafts singles sit at the upper end, while comparable lone sleigh beds sit mid-range. Doubles and anything titled "large" cluster above the plain and "small" singles; a cot bed and a small sleigh bed sit at the bottom.

Timber counts too. Where a title names pitch pine rather than plain old pine, the piece tends to sit in the upper half - the pitch pine double and the marquetry inlaid pitch pine 3/4 bed both do. Pitch pine is denser and more strongly figured, and dealers price the distinction.

Anything worked beyond plain pine lifts a frame: carving, marquetry inlay, faux bamboo turning and paint all appear above the plain sleigh bed group. So does a recorded name. The one title advertising a maker's label is the highest-priced single bed in the archive, though no maker recurs across the category at all.

Questions people ask

Antique Pine Beds: Frequently Asked Questions

How common are pine beds on Sellingantiques?

Around four a year, spread across roughly fifteen dealers. No single dealer carries them in any depth.

That makes the archive shallow but wide. Forty listings in total, and the sleigh form accounts for well over half of them.

What is a lit bateau?

It's the French name for the sleigh form, literally "boat bed", after the outward scroll at both ends.

The shape came out of early 19th-century French taste and carried on in provincial pine long afterwards. One title on the site uses the term directly, on a faux bamboo single.

Are pairs of pine singles easy to find?

They're a recurring format rather than an oddity. At least six titles begin "Pair" or "Pair of", covering sleigh beds, Arts and Crafts singles and bed ends.

Pairs also sit at the top of the range, alongside the one bed advertised as carrying a maker's label.

Why don't listings give bed measurements?

Sizes in this category are described in words: "small", "large", "single", "3/4", "small double". Only one title in forty quotes a figure.

The 3/4 width is the one worth knowing, sitting between single and double and still met in Victorian and Edwardian frames.

Do any makers appear on pine beds?

Almost none. A scan of the whole archive turned up no named bedstead maker with any presence in the category.

One title advertises a label, and it's the highest-priced single bed recorded. Otherwise these were everyday frames, made in quantity and unsigned.

What unusual pine beds have turned up?

A pine prison bed described as carrying graffiti, and a pitch pine dog bed. Each appears once and nowhere else.

Two cot beds, dated 1900 and 1920, cover the child-size end. Faux bamboo turning shows up on just two pieces.
