This Edwardian novelty silver and bone dagger bookmark is a charming accessory for a gentleman's library or office desk. The piece takes the form of a miniature dagger, combining a tapering silver blade with a polished cream-coloured bone handle. An engraved silver ferrule joins the handle to a distinct scroll crossguard and a rounded pommel. The blade features stamped hallmarks and maker's marks near the hilt, along with a recessed central channel running toward the pointed tip. Excellent condition is maintained throughout, showing no dents or splits in the metal. The bookmark measures 11.6 cm high by 3 cm wide and 0.8 cm deep. In a modern interior, this functional collector's item sits neatly upon a writing desk or rests inside a favorite volume as a page marker. The combination of gleaming silver and smooth bone brings a touch of historical character to daily reading routines or study spaces. It serves as both a practical desktop accessory and an intriguing conversation piece for those who appreciate antique stationery and silverware.

During the Edwardian era (19011910), silversmiths frequently crafted functional desk accessories in whimsical shapes, including bookmarks fashioned as daggers, swords, or trowels. These novelty objects were popular decorative gifts designed to mark pages without damaging book bindings.

Pieces from this period commonly combined sterling silver or silver-plated blades with organic materials for the handle, such as turned bone, mother-of-pearl, ivory, or tortoiseshell.

Authentic British silver bookmarks carry official hallmarks stamped on the blade or hilt, including a makers mark, assay office mark, lion passant for sterling purity, and a date letter corresponding to the early 20th century.

A small novelty desk item can be displayed lying across a stack of hardback books, positioned inside an open display cabinet, or styled alongside traditional stationery on a home office desk.

Polish the silver blade gently using a soft silver polishing cloth, keeping chemical polishes away from the natural bone handle. Store the object in a low-humidity environment to prevent tarnishing and protect the handle from cracking.
