This unusual Edwardian trinket dish originates from America and dates to the period around 1900, carrying the maker's mark for Wallace Sterling 393 alongside a weight of 94 grams. Formed from solid sterling silver with a reflective silver colour and polished finish, the piece takes the shape of an open clam shell. Visible details include concentric ridged textures across the interior bowl, a fluted edge, and a small engraved Gothic letter M near the hinge. Measuring 15 cm in length by over 10 cm in width, the compact dish suits everyday placement on a sideboard top within a coastal retreat interior. It serves practically as a small container for holding rings, cuff links, or loose coins in a hallway or bedroom setting.

Silver dishes modelled after natural sea shells, such as clams and scallops, gained widespread popularity during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries as decorative table accents used for serving butter, sweetmeats, or holding small personal trinkets.

During this period, American and European silversmiths utilised precision die-stamping, pressing, and hand-chasing techniques to replicate the natural concentric ridges, textures, and contours of organic marine shells in solid silver.

Authentic American sterling silver from around 1900 is typically stamped with the word STERLING alongside a recognised makers marksuch as the Wallace silversmith stampand an optional pattern or catalogue number.

Position a silver shell dish on a bedside table, dressing table, or bathroom vanity unit to function as a refined catchall for jewellery, or display it alongside hardcover books on a sideboard.

Wash silver gently in warm water with mild detergent and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Apply specialist silver polish sparingly to remove oxidisation while preserving the darker contrast in the detailed grooves.
