This English mid-century sterling silver corkscrew, hallmarked for Birmingham in 1961 by maker J B Chatterley & Sons Ltd, functions as functional barware within a highland hunting lodge style. The piece comprises a solid cast sterling silver handle shaped as a detailed pheasant in flight with chased feather texture, joined to a steel worm via a round flanged collar that bears a visible hallmark stamp. Its metallic silver colour scheme combines a textured grey-silver handle with a polished chrome-like steel screw. Measuring 10.5 cm long by 10.8 cm across with a weight of 52 grams, this bar tool suits placement on a dining room sideboard top for opening wine bottles during dinner parties or gatherings. The sturdy construction presents a smooth finish across the worm and collar, while the detailed avian handle provides a firm grip.

Novelty sterling silver barware gained popularity during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries as entertaining accessories for private dining and country estates. Silversmiths created figurative handles representing wildlife, sports, and everyday objects to add character to bar tools.

Silver corkscrews typically feature a cast or chased sterling silver handle joined to a steel shank and worm. The steel provides the mechanical strength required to pull corks, while the silver collar and handle serve ergonomic and decorative purposes.

Authentic British sterling silver features full hallmarks struck by an official assay office, including the lion passant mark for 925 purity, an assay town mark, a makers mark, and a specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

Silver barware is styled on a tray placed upon a sideboard, drinks trolley, or kitchen counter alongside glass decanters and crystal glassware. Positioning smaller silver tools on a textured wooden surface creates visual contrast.

Sterling silver elements should be polished gently with a soft cloth and silver polish to remove tarnish. Steel components must be wiped clean and kept thoroughly dry to prevent oxidisation and corrosion over time.
