Pair of 18th Century Rococo Gilt-silver Candlesticks, 113cm High

18th century
Description

"A pair of highly decorative mid-18th century wooden, Italian or Spanish candlesticks with scrolling Rococo decoration, raised ornament and distinctive shaped bases. Finished in an attractive aged gilt-silver effect. Franciscan emblem featuring crossed arms beneath a cross. The photographs give a fairly accurate representation of the missing gesso on the feet. One candlestick also has some missing gesso around the base where the turned section begins. I have tried to show all areas of loss clearly to avoid disappointment.

A pair of mid-18th century wooden candlesticks showcases the Rococo style with scrolling decoration, raised ornament, and distinctive shaped bases finished in an aged gilt-silver effect. Each piece incorporates a Franciscan emblem showing crossed arms beneath a cross, alongside a pricket spike on a carved baluster shaft rising from a triangular tripod base. The wooden construction bears a silver leaf and gesso finish displaying missing gesso on the feet and around the base where the turned section begins, alongside visible iron hardware on the pricket spikes. The dimensions measure 113 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. These items suit placement on a fireplace hearth in a home today.

Rococo candlesticks from the 18th century feature asymmetrical ornamentation, S-scrolls, C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and elaborate baluster shafts, designed for grand domestic or ecclesiastical settings.

They were typically carved from lightweight timber, coated with a gesso base, and finished with silver leaf or silver-gilt application, featuring an iron pricket spike at the top to secure tall wax candles.

Authentic period examples exhibit age-appropriate wear to the silver leaf exposing underlying bole or timber, hand-carved construction details, iron oxidisation on the pricket spike, and heavy triangular scroll-cut bases.

These monumental pieces function well flanking a fireplace hearth, placed on a large sideboard, or set in an entrance hall to introduce structural height and historic interest.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, cleaning sprays, or commercial polishes that could strip delicate gesso and aged metallic leaf.
