This silver-plated metal paper knife or letter opener originates from the Art Deco period of 1940. Designed by Luc Lanel for Christofle, the piece exhibits a polished silver colour throughout its structure. The handle displays geometric fluting and a ribbed texture, while the blade is smooth and tapered towards the point. The handle bears full Christofle maker's marks alongside the chess mark, and the metal has been cleaned and polished by a silversmith. The object measures 24.8 cm high, 3.5 cm wide, and 0.3 cm deep. Positioned on an office desk, this desk accessory serves as a practical tool for opening correspondence and documents. The design suits contemporary work spaces requiring period metalwork and streamlined desk accessories.

Art Deco desk accessories feature geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and functional designs characteristic of mid-20th-century French metalwork.

These pieces were commonly crafted from silver-plated base metals, nickel alloys, or sterling silver, polished to a reflective finish.

Look for stamped maker marks, manufacturer hallmarks, and pattern stamps typically located near the base of the blade or along the handle join.

Position the paper knife alongside a leather blotter, brass paperweight, or stationery organiser on an office desk or library console table.

Wipe gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads that could remove the electroplated surface layer over time.
