Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of eighteenth-century Venetian wall sconces follows a Rococo style executed in carved wood, gesso, and gold leaf with a gold colour. Each piece displays an ornate design featuring cartouche-shaped panels, flowerheads, stylised vase finials, and acanthus leaves alongside twin up-scrolled candlebranches with visible leaf carving. The construction incorporates scrolling elements across the backplate, intricate surface decoration, and a gilded finish. The dimensions measure 60 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. Suitable placement for these items includes narrow wall spaces within a domestic interior. They function effectively on a living room, dining room, or hallway wall to provide ornamental lighting fixtures.

FAQs

Venetian Rococo wall sconces from this period are characterised by asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus foliage, and elaborate carved ornamentation. Designed to reflect candlelight, these wall-mounted fixtures were carved from timber, coated in gesso, and finished with gold leaf.

Giltwood sconces were constructed using softwoods such as pine or lindenwood for ease of carving. The carved structure was then covered with layers of gesso, smoothed, painted with a coloured clay bole, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf applied through water gilding.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carving marks on the reverse, signs of natural gesso shrinkage or cracking, and subtle exposure of the underlying red or grey clay bole through worn gold leaf. Hardware such as iron mounting hooks and candle nozzles will show historical fabrication methods rather than modern uniform threads.

Giltwood sconces can be mounted on either side of a large mirror, architectural doorway, or central artwork to create balanced symmetry. They add warm metallic tones and sculptural texture to neutral walls or dark backdrop palettes.

Water-gilded surfaces are delicate and water-soluble, meaning liquid cleaners and damp cloths must be avoided. Dusting should be executed gently using a soft, dry goat-hair brush to prevent lifting loose gold leaf or disturbing the underlying gesso.
