A Georgian sterling silver pill or patch box by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham, dated 1826. The rectangular piece displays silver colour throughout with a polished finish. Detailed examination reveals intricate lattice hand engraving across the top surface, an unengraved central circular cartouche, and reeded detailing along the sides. The hinged lid opens via a raised foliate thumbpiece, and the exterior features a beaded border along the top edge of the base alongside a cast and chased foliate decoration on the front mounting. Hallmarks for Joseph Taylor appear alongside the Birmingham assay office mark, lion passant, and duty mark. The box measures 1 cm high, 3.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. It sits well on a bedside table to store small personal items in a modern home.

A Georgian silver box is a small pocket-sized container constructed from sterling silver during the reign of the British Georgian monarchs between 1714 and 1830. These boxes were created for functional uses such as carrying snuff, pills, or aromatic sponges.

These boxes were primarily crafted from high-purity sterling silver (925 parts per thousand). The decorative finishes often involved techniques such as hand engraving, engine turning, and cast relief work on thumbpieces and borders.

Authentic British Georgian silver displays a complete set of hallmarks stamped by an assay office. These marks include the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark (such as an anchor for Birmingham), a makers initials mark, a date letter, and the monarchs profile duty mark.

A small silver box can be styled on a bedside table, dressing table tray, or desk top as an accent piece. It can also be incorporated into a curated display cabinet alongside other metalware or historical artefacts.

Clean silver using a specialized silver polishing cloth or a non-abrasive silver cream to remove oxidisation without wearing down delicate surface engravings. Store the piece in a dry environment inside an anti-tarnish cloth bag.
