This nineteenth-century French Louis XV Revival writing bureau uses walnut and kingwood timber finished in a warm brown colour, paired with ormolu and brass hardware. The piece features an ornate pierced brass gallery along the top edge, decorative gilt-bronze mounts on the canted corners, and two cast brass drop handles on the full-width drawer beneath the sloped fall front. Graceful cabriole legs terminate in decorative brass sabots at the floor. The desk measures a practical 94 cm in height, 76 cm in width, and 50 cm in depth, with a writing surface height of 75 cm. Position this writing bureau in a home study or a quiet corner of a sitting room as a functional workspace or a display surface. The slant-front fall opens to provide a writing area alongside internal compartments and small drawers for storage and organisation.

Originating in 18th-century France and popularised throughout the 19th century, the Louis XV style bureau is characterised by serpentine silhouettes, cabriole legs, and elaborate gilt-bronze mounts. Often designed as a ladies writing desk or bureau de dame, these pieces combine a compact footprint with a slant-front writing slope.

Traditional French bureaus from the 19th century feature timber frames veneered with exotic woods such as kingwood, tulipwood, or walnut marquetry. Hand-cast and chased gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts are fitted to vulnerable edges, corner knees, and feet to both protect the veneer and provide decorative contrast.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original iron locks, and cast ormolu mounts secured with hand-cut screws rather than modern fasteners. Additionally, natural age marks, slight shrinkage along veneer seams, and oxidised wood surfaces inside unvarnished drawers indicate period construction.

A French slant-front bureau serves as a focal accent in a hallway, bedroom, or living room nook due to its narrow depth and compact proportions. Positioning the desk against a neutral backdrop allows the wood grain and brass mounts to contrast cleanly with minimalist decor.

Dusting should be conducted regularly using a clean, dry cloth to prevent debris accumulation around metal mounts. High-grade beeswax applied sparingly preserves the timber finish, while abrasive metal cleaners or chemical polishes must be avoided to protect the original gilt patina.
