This antique Art Deco trilogy ring dates from circa 1920 and is made from platinum. A central oval cabochon cut opal is secured in a claw prong setting, displaying play of colour with orange, green and yellow tones. The stone is flanked by two Old European round cut side stones in individual claw prongs, with pierced openwork visible along the basket and shoulders, and a plain polished shank. The overall dimensions measure 1.77 cm in length and 1.44 cm in width. Suitable for wear as an engagement ring, anniversary gift or personal celebration, this piece sits neatly on the finger. It suits placement on a ring tray on a dressing table when not in use.

The trilogy or three-stone ring design gained widespread popularity in the late Victorian and Art Deco eras, symbolically representing the past, present, and future. During the 1920s, jewellers paired vibrant gemstones such as opals with diamonds set in newly favoured metals like platinum.

1920s fine jewellery relied heavily on platinum for its strength and neutral backdrop, allowing intricate wirework and claw settings. Natural cabochon opals, diamonds, and white precious metals were quintessential components of high-end Art Deco rings.

Authentic 1920s pieces typically display hand-finished platinum work, period hallmarks, and old-cut side diamonds. The central cabochon opal should exhibit natural play-of-colour variations rather than the uniform synthetic patterns found in modern imitations.

An antique opal trilogy ring serves as a statement dress piece or unique engagement ring. It pairs well with minimalist modern wardrobe choices, allowing the iridescence of the gemstone and bright platinum band to draw visual focus.

Opals are relatively soft and porous gemstones, requiring careful wear away from harsh chemicals, extreme temperature shifts, and water exposure. Clean gently using a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged heat.
