This George II yew wood dressing table dates from the eighteenth century in the English country house style. The piece presents a warm brown colour palette with cream and brown figured timber veneers, natural dark inclusions, and crossbanded borders. It stands on bracket feet and incorporates a long frieze drawer with small ring handles above a central recessed cupboard enclosed by a door with brass H hinges, flanked by three smaller drawers on each side, all fitted with brass ring pull handles and keyhole escutcheons. The top features a brass band edge surrounding bookmatched veneers. Measuring 84 cm wide by 81 cm high and 48 cm deep, the table provides ample surface area and compartmentalised storage. Today, this traditional item functions effectively in a home as a decorative freestanding desk or a vanity unit in a bedroom or dressing room.

Furniture produced during the reign of George II (17271760) features balanced proportions, rich wood veneers, and architectural shapes that bridge the gap between Queen Anne simplicity and early Chippendale detailing.

Cabinetmakers predominantly selected native hardwoods such as figured yew wood, walnut, and mahogany, utilizing oak or pine for internal drawer construction alongside cast brass ring handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-sawn back panels, evidence of natural timber shrinkage over time, and subtle oxidisation surrounding the original brass hardware.

This compact desk style works effectively as a hall console or bedroom vanity table, contrasting well against crisp contemporary paint colours, simple modern seating, and understated lighting.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid bleaching or wood movement, and polish the surface annually with natural beeswax along the grain to protect the original patination.
