Introduction

Antique Mahogany Dressing Tables

The dressing table grew out of the 18th-century bedroom or closet table, fitted with drawers for washing, shaving and hairdressing, and by the 19th century it commonly carried a fixed or swing mirror. Mahogany was the standard cabinet timber for British furniture of this sort from the middle of the 18th century onward.

The form you'll meet most often is Victorian or Edwardian: "Victorian" appears in 160 of 566 titles and "Edwardian" in 74, against 43 using "mirror". A mirror over a drawered base is the pattern the category rests on. Around 65 come to market in a year on Sellingantiques, listed by 147 different dealers, so this is furniture almost any general dealer handles rather than a specialism.

Underneath that run several distinct shapes. The duchess, with the mirror built onto the back of the table and small drawers flanking it, is common enough to have its own word, appearing in 52 titles under two spellings. Dressing chests in chest-of-drawers form account for 48 titles. Georgian, Regency and George III side or writing tables, plain two- and three-drawer pieces among them, make up roughly a quarter once the labels overlap.

Two smaller groups sit alongside. Shaving stands, 26 of them, are tall stands with an adjustable mirror, some telescopic, some on a tripod base. French mahogany examples, often Empire in style with ormolu mounts or a marble top, run to 27 titles and are the rarest origin group named. Dating is loose: only 173 listings carry a clean year, and those bunch in the 1860s and 1870s, then again in the 1900s and 1910s.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

Surface decoration does most of the lifting. Inlay appears in 49 titles, with satinwood, crossbanding, boxwood stringing and marquetry sitting well up the range, strongest on Edwardian work. Timber figure pulls in the same direction: flame mahogany turns up in 11 titles, and figured and plum-pudding veneers sit toward the upper part of what sells.

Shape counts for as much as ornament. Bowfront and bow front together account for 31 titles, and serpentine, breakfront, demi-lune, concave and kidney-shaped fronts all cost more in labour than a flat one. A plain rectangular table with a mirror screwed to the back is the base of the category, not the top.

The last two lifts are naming and fittings. Titles carrying a named reign, George III in 28 of them, along with George IV, William IV and Regency, sit above the unqualified "mahogany dressing table". So do pieces with something extra attached: a stool, a tambour cabinet, a secretaire fitment, campaign or travelling fittings, a triple or cheval mirror. The highest-priced pieces in the archive are 18th-century George II and George III examples, an order above the Victorian and Edwardian body of the category.

A dressing table with the mirror mounted on its back, usually flanked by small drawers. Fifty-two titles use one spelling or the other, and a few dealers write it "Dutchess".
Dressing chest
Chest-of-drawers form fitted for dressing, often with a swing or shield mirror above. Forty-eight titles, many with graduated drawers.

Questions people ask

Antique Mahogany Dressing Tables: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a duchess dressing table?

A table with the mirror built onto the back rather than standing separately, usually with small drawers to either side of the glass.

It's common enough in this category to be its own word, appearing in 52 titles under the duchess and duchesse spellings, and concentrated in Victorian listings.

Are dressing tables and dressing chests the same thing?

They serve the same purpose but sit on different bases. A dressing table is usually open-legged; a dressing chest is a chest of drawers fitted for dressing, often with a swing or shield mirror above.

Chest-form pieces make up a substantial minority, with "chest" in 48 of the titles.

Which periods turn up most often?

Victorian and Edwardian dominate: "Victorian" appears in 160 of 566 titles, "Edwardian" in 74. Georgian, Regency and George III pieces together account for roughly a quarter.

Eighteenth-century examples are scarce, reaching only about one title in a hundred.

Why do shaving stands appear in this category?

They belong to the same business of washing, shaving and dressing, so dealers list them alongside the tables. Twenty-six of them are recorded.

Several are described as telescopic or standing on a tripod base, and one carries a marble top.

How are these pieces usually dated?

Often by period label rather than year. Only 173 of the listings carry a clean year; the rest rest on "Victorian", "19th Century", "Edwardian", "Georgian" or "Regency".

Where years are given they span 1800 to 1930, bunching in the 1860s and 1870s, then the 1900s and 1910s.

Do French mahogany dressing tables come up?

Yes, in 27 titles, which makes them the rarest origin group named in the category. Empire styling recurs, with ormolu mounts and marble tops.

Dutch, Viennese and American pieces each appear once. Their share of current stock is rising.
