Introduction

Victorian Dressing Tables

The form goes back to the eighteenth-century bedroom table used for washing and grooming. By the nineteenth century it had settled into a table or chest with drawers below and a fixed or swinging mirror above, and Victorian bedroom furnishing pushed it into matching suites and men's shaving stands.

Timber is the first thing a title tells you. Mahogany is named in 168 of 380 titles on Sellingantiques, more than walnut, pine and oak together. Walnut follows in 88 titles, of which burr walnut accounts for a large share. Pine and oak trail behind.

The commonest single form is the duchess, a mirror mounted on scroll or column supports over a low drawered base. It's common enough to be spelled two ways in the same archive, duchess in 60 titles and duchesse in 9. Behind it sit dressing chests, which are chests of drawers with a mirror above, and pedestal or kneehole tables built on drawer-filled columns.

Two other groups share the heading. Painted, stencilled and stripped pine tables cluster at the lower end, and free-standing shaving stands and telescopic shaving mirrors form a self-contained corner, 30 titles carrying the word shaving. Now and then something arrives from outside the English bedroom: a French kingwood coiffeuse, a chinoiserie lacquered kidney-shaped table, a bamboo-and-lacquer Aesthetic example.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

Timber does most of the work. Burr walnut, named in 53 titles, clusters in the upper reaches of the range, and figured or flame veneers pull in the same direction. Plain pine and satin walnut sit at the other end, and painted or stripped pine is where the category bottoms out.

Decorative work is the second lever. Carving turns up in 18 titles and inlay in 14, and marquetry-inlaid and cross-banded pieces appear repeatedly toward the top. Marble tops, and original painted or stencilled decoration on the country pieces, get called out in titles as the thing that lifts a piece above its neighbours.

Then there's the base. Pedestal, twin-pedestal, breakfront and kneehole constructions sit above a simple four-legged table, and a piece carrying a firm's name or a maker's stamp sits higher again, though such titles are a minority. At the very top are exhibition-grade burr walnut and complete bedroom suites.

The Victorian Dressing Tables Glossary

Duchess (duchesse)
A dressing table with the mirror mounted on the back, usually on scroll or column supports over a low drawered base. Both spellings appear in listings.
Dressing chest
A chest of drawers with a mirror above it, sold as a dressing table. Titles run to dressing table chest and dressing chest of drawers.
Kneehole
A recessed central space between two drawer banks, so the sitter's knees fit under the top.
Pedestal
A base built as one or two drawer-filled columns rather than legs. Twin pedestal means one at each end.
Burr walnut
Veneer cut from a burr growth on the tree, giving dense swirling figure. Named in 53 titles.
Telescopic
A stand or mirror whose column extends for height adjustment, common among the shaving stands.
Questions people ask

Victorian Dressing Tables: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a duchess dressing table?

It's a low table with drawers, carrying a mirror mounted on the back between scroll or column supports.

On Sellingantiques the word appears in about a fifth of listings, most often paired with mahogany or walnut. Dealers spell it duchess and duchesse, and once Dutchess.

Which timbers turn up most?

Mahogany leads, named in 168 of 380 titles, more than walnut, pine and oak combined. Walnut is next in 88 titles, with burr walnut making up a good part of that.

Pine appears in 31 titles and oak in a handful. Pale timbers run underneath as a quiet undercurrent: satinwood in 12 titles, plus satin birch, satin walnut, bird's-eye maple, Hungarian ash and pitch pine.

Why are shaving stands listed here?

Dealers put free-standing shaving stands and telescopic shaving mirrors in the same category as dressing tables, since both belong to Victorian bedroom grooming.

The word shaving appears in 30 titles, with pole, tripod and brass forms among them. Adjustable and gentleman are the words that tend to travel with them.

How precisely are these pieces dated?

Loosely, for the most part. Of 380 listings, 191 simply say Victorian and another 33 say 19th Century, so over half carry no decade at all.

Where a decade is given the weight falls mid-to-late: the 1860s lead, followed by the 1880s, 1850s and 1870s. Only 137 listings carry a clean year, and the field stretches from 1850 to 1930.

What separates a dressing chest from a dressing table?

A dressing chest is a full chest of drawers with a mirror above it. A dressing table proper has a lower base, whether on legs, pedestals or around a kneehole.

The word chest appears in 44 titles and mirror in 48, which shows how often a piece under this heading is really a mirrored chest.

How many come up for sale?

Ninety-nine different dealers have listed Victorian dressing tables on Sellingantiques, with roughly forty-four coming to market in a year.

That spread means the category covers everything from painted pine to exhibition-grade burr walnut and complete bedroom suites.
