Late Georgian Mahogany Gentleman’s Dressing Table / Vanity with Mirror

18th century
Description

A fine George III mahogany gentleman’s dressing table of elegant and practical design, dating to the late 18th century.

The well-figured rectangular hinged top opens to reveal a fitted interior with divided compartments, flanking an easel backed mirror.

The drawer configuration consists of two dummy drawers over two short drawers, all retaining their original brass handles and escutcheons. The drawers are oak-lined throughout, a hallmark of quality Georgian cabinet making.

The table stands on slender tapering legs terminating in original brass castors, giving it a light and refined stance. The mahogany has developed a rich colour and patina consistent with age.

A versatile and increasingly sought-after form, ideal as a gentleman’s dressing table, or elegant occasional table.

Condition:

Good antique condition, wear commensurate with age and use. Overall very well preserved with an attractive, consistent patina. There are historic shrinkage cracks to the top which are not unexpected given the age of the piece and these do not detract from the overall appeal of this handsome antique.

Height: 80.5 cm / 31.75"

Depth: 51 cm / 20"

Width: 75.5 cm / 29.75"

Popularised in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a gentlemans dressing table is a compact piece of mechanical furniture engineered with hidden compartments, folding leaves, and adjustable mirrors designed for personal grooming.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, brass hardware, and fine wood inlays such as boxwood or satinwood.

Authentic late Georgian examples showcase hand-cut dovetails, original brass ring handles, natural wear on unvarnished drawer interiors, and timber shrinkage marks consistent with late eighteenth-century hand-tooling.

Position the piece in a principal bedroom, hallway, or dressing space where its folding leaves can be displayed open or closed, pairing effectively with understated modern lighting and neutral textile accents.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the wood grain, ensuring the timber is kept free from excessive moisture and direct sunlight.
