Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Queen Anne bureau bookcase typically features figured walnut or burr walnut veneers, arched mirrored upper cabinet doors, a sloping slant-front writing flap, and lower drawers raised on bracket feet.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted using oak or pine carcasses faced with highly figured burr walnut veneers, featuring featherbanding inlays, cast brass drop handles, and bevelled mirror plate glass.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings with grain running front-to-back, original hand-blown mirror glass with soft bevels, and evidence of natural timber oxidisation on unpolished surfaces.

Position the bureau bookcase as a focal architectural piece in a study, drawing room, or hallway, contrasting the warm walnut tones against neutral wall paint and modern brass lighting.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer cracking, and maintain stable indoor relative humidity.
