Early Victorian Staffordshire Pale Blue Transferware Gilt Small Oval Serving Platter, circa 1850

A highly decorative and unusual mid-19th-century English Staffordshire blue transferware oval serving platter, dating to approximately 1840–1860.

The platter is particularly attractive for its unusually soft pale-blue transfer-printed decoration, comprising an elaborate border of large stylised flowers, scrolling foliage, bell-shaped flower heads, latticework and small classical-style ornamental motifs surrounding a predominantly undecorated central well.

The outer edge was originally finished with a fine gilt border, portions of which remain visible around the rim. Much of the gilding has naturally worn away through approximately 170 years of handling and use, leaving an attractive aged appearance.

The cream-white earthenware body displays extensive fine glaze crazing, particularly visible across the central well and rim, together with occasional age-related discolouration. The slightly variable transfer printing and small manufacturing imperfections are characteristic of 19th-century production.

The underside is unmarked. Although the precise Staffordshire factory has not been identified, the body, transfer-printing technique, decorative treatment and construction are consistent with English Staffordshire manufacture of the mid-19th century.

Condition: Good decorative antique condition commensurate with considerable age. Extensive overall glaze crazing, some age-related staining and surface wear, and substantial rubbing/loss to the original gilt rim. There are also minor firing/manufacturing imperfections and areas of variation to the transfer decoration. No major structural crack or restoration is apparent from the photographs examined. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
