This pair of knife rests belongs to the Art Deco period of the early twentieth century and is made by WMF. Each piece takes the figurative form of a running greyhound with outstretched limbs, sculpted in silver plated Britannia metal. The cast metal details show pointed muzzles, pinned ears, slender torsos and extended legs that form the support frame for cutlery. The finish displays a bright silver colour with visible signs of age including minor surface marks, surface tarnishing and wear to the plating in places. The dimensions measure 2 cm high, 9 cm wide and 1.5 cm deep. These practical decorative accessories find their ideal home on a dining table, sideboard top or kitchen island during formal dinner parties or daily family meals to rest silverware between courses. They bring a touch of vintage sporting character and sculptural design to contemporary table settings while keeping table linens clean.

Popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, knife rests were designed to protect tablecloths from soiled cutlery during multi-course meals, often taking decorative figurative forms like animals.

Knife rests were commonly manufactured using electroplated nickel silver, solid sterling silver, cut crystal, brass, and carved horn.

Authentic period pieces typically feature makers marks, such as WMF or EPNS stamps, crisp casting details, and signs of genuine age including minor surface wear or oxidisation.

They can be styled on formal dinner tables alongside contemporary flatware, repurposed as decorative chopstick holders, or displayed on a sideboard as sculptural table accoutrements.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that can strip the silver plating.
