Description

A fine pair of Nantgarw porcelain plates, circa 1818-22. Each plate finely potted with shell-moulded rims with twelve equal lobes, the cavetto very finely painted in London, probably by the Bradley workshop, with full floral sprays, including two superbly painted roses, chrysanthemums, bluebell and morning glory, within a blue enamel line in Sèvres style and surrounded by scattered insects, the borders with five smaller sprays and dentil gilt rim, two further insects on the underside of one, 23.2cm diam, impressed NANT-GARW CW

Founded in Wales in 1813 by William Billingsley, Nantgarw produced soft-paste porcelain famed for its high translucency and delicate hand-painted floral decoration.

These plates were manufactured using a soft-paste porcelain body and fired before being sent to independent enamellers in London for hand-painted botanical detailing and gilded rims.

Authentic pieces often feature an impressed mark such as NANT-GARW C.W. on the underside, alongside translucent, glassy paste and high-quality enamel work typical of early nineteenth-century London workshops.
