19th Century Tibetan Pierced Silver Buddhist Auspicious Symbol Plaque / Appliqué, c.1880

An attractive late 19th-century Tibetan or Sino-Tibetan pierced silver decorative plaque, finely worked in openwork and engraved with Buddhist auspicious ornament.

Of circular form, the plaque is constructed from thin worked silver sheet and features an intricate geometric openwork ground incorporating repeated endless-knot inspired forms, overlaid with finely engraved Buddhist and floral emblems. The outer border is decorated with a continuous band of engraved triangular motifs and a finely beaded inner edge.

The imagery belongs to the decorative vocabulary associated with Tibetan Buddhism, where the Eight Auspicious Symbols and related lotus, vajra and endless-knot motifs commonly appear on ritual vessels, portable shrines, ga’u amulet boxes and ceremonial metalwork. Comparable Tibetan ga’u are known with pierced silver fronts carrying the Eight Auspicious Symbols.

A small central fixing aperture indicates that this was almost certainly originally mounted or pinned to a larger devotional or ceremonial object rather than intended as a standalone ornament.

The reverse clearly shows the hand-cut openwork construction and substantial age-related surface wear.
