Georgian Walnut Kneehole Desk - Circa 1735

18th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A wonderful early Georgian walnut kneehole desk with a superb colour and patina.

This particular piece is a beautiful example of its type with thickly cut, well-matched veneers, cross banding and featherbanding dressing the solid oak cascass. It features a quarter-veneer top with a moulded edge below which is a brushing slide with lopers, one long frieze drawer and two banks of three graduated drawers either side of a central cupboard with a gothic arch moulded panel. The central section has a rare additional feature which allows the cupboard to be pulled forward to turn the desk into a small sideboard, making this a more versatile piece of furniture suitable for use in many different rooms (see images for details).

The overall condition is very good with age-related wear and tear and a lovely deep, rich patina.

A wonderful example of Georgian cabinetry made using premium quality materials by highly skilled craftsmen.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in early 18th-century Britain, a kneehole desk features a recessed central cavity flanked by columns of drawers, often incorporating a small central cupboard or apron drawer.

These desks were typically constructed using solid walnut or figure-matched walnut veneers laid over softwood carcasses, accented with cast brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings, thick veneer cuts, original brass plates, and shaped bracket feet.

Pair the desk with a contemporary desk lamp and neutral artwork to create a balanced focal point within a modern study or living space.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight, applying high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the patinated surface.
