A Rare Russian Silver & Enamel Egg on Stand

1900 - 1920
Description

A remarkable and rare late 19th century (?) Russian SILVER & ENAMEL EGG of quite large size. This beautiful, decorative and stunning Work of Art, comprises the large egg (6ins; 15cms high) and a finely worked silver stand. The EGG: is of two parts and opens to reveal the vacant silver-gilt interior which is hallmarked to both top and base. The outside is superbly decorated: the cast silver very finely engraved and with exquisite enamel work in pastel colours of green, blue and pink. It is further set with a total of ten cabochon precious stones ~ possibly rubies ?~ surmounted by a larger stone to the top. Hallmarked to the inside of the top and base, and further hallmarked to the edges.

The STAND: this is beautifully crafted, standing on three ‘legs’ which are cast as pairs of cloven-hoofed legs, with three “finials” of double-headed eagles. Hallmarked simply with “84” to the silver ring that connects the tripod legs. A rare and beautiful object, the likes of which we have never previously stocked! The egg: 6ins (15cms high); Total height, including the stand: 8.5ins (21.6cms). Highly recommended.

This Russian silver and enamel egg on stand dates from the 1900 period. The piece comprises a two-part silver egg with a hinged opening, decorated with pastel green, blue and pink enamel, and inset with ten cabochon stones and a top finial, supported on a cast silver tripod base with cloven-hoofed legs and double-headed eagle finials, and measuring 21 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative art object provides a striking focal point on a mantelpiece, side table, or within a glass-fronted cabinet in a living room or study. The interior reveals a vacant silver-gilt compartment with visible hallmarks, while the exterior displays detailed engraving, floral-patterned cloisonné enamel work, and a matching fitted stand that elevates the piece on three curved legs.

Originating in late 19th and early 20th-century Russia, enamelled silver eggs were crafted as decorative objects and symbolic gifts, frequently associated with Easter traditions and Imperial patronage.

Craftsmen soldered thin silver wires onto a silver substrate to create compartmentalised patterns, which were filled with powdered glass enamel in various colours and fired at high temperatures before polishing.

Authentic pieces typically feature official Imperial Russian hallmark stamps, such as the 84 zolotnik mark or maker initials, along with precise wirework and uniform enamel application.

Display the item inside a glazed cabinet, atop a mantelpiece, or within a side table vignette to serve as a focused decorative accent among contemporary or traditional decor.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid chemical silver cleaners or liquid immersion, as moisture can degrade gilding and damage delicate vitreous enamel.
