This Georgian solid sterling silver serving ladle from the workshop of Hester Bateman originates from London around the 1780s. The bright silver metal has a polished reflective finish, and the handle terminal bears an engraved Davy family crest depicting a cannon. Faint surface marks appear inside the bowl, though the structure remains free from dings, splits, or repairs. Measuring 31.2 cm in length by 9.2 cm in width, this large ladle weighs 152 grams. In a modern home, this piece serves practical functions at the dining table for serving soups, stews, or punches during family meals and gatherings. It stores easily in a silverware chest, drawer, or display cabinet when not in active use.

Georgian silver ladles produced during the 18th century reflect the formal dining customs of the period, crafted primarily in London silversmith workshops for serving soups and punches at aristocratic tables.

These pieces were hand-forged from sterling silver with a purity of 925 parts per thousand, featuring hand-beaten circular or oval bowls joined to long curved handles often finished with armorial crests.

Authentic pieces carry British assay office hallmarks, including the makers mark, the lion passant for sterling standard, a date letter, and the sovereigns head duty mark where applicable.

Antique silver ladles can be displayed on a sideboard top inside a glazed cabinet or integrated into formal table arrangements as functional serving pieces during dinner gatherings.

Clean silver gently with a non-abrasive silver foam or polish using a soft cloth, rinse in warm water, and store in anti-tarnish fabric sleeves away from excessive moisture.
