This eighteenth-century Dutch Rococo bureau desk presents a bombe form rendered in warm brown burr walnut with intricate fruitwood floral marquetry inlay throughout the exterior surfaces. Ornate cast brass swing handles accent the three curved long drawers below a slant fall-front, while carved claw feet support the base alongside a shaped apron. The piece measures 113.7 cm high by 144 cm wide and 67 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a study, library, or formal living room, this practical workspace offers extensive storage capacity through its internal drawers and central compartment. The substantial timber construction and detailed decorative marquetry suit traditional domestic interiors, providing a functional writing surface combined with display presence.

An 18th-century Dutch bombe bureau features a convex, outward-swelling lower structure combined with a sloping fall-front writing surface. Frequently decorated with floral marquetry inlay, these pieces reflect the curvilinear forms and ornamental detailing characteristic of the Rococo period.

Cabinetmakers used high-density woods such as oak for the carcass, layered with decorative veneers of burr walnut, fruitwood, boxwood, and holly. The inlays were cut by hand and fitted alongside hand-dovetailed drawer joinery and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit irregular hand-sawn veneer thickness, hand-cut dovetail joints, and oak secondary drawer linings. Ageing evidence includes natural timber shrinkage cracks, oxidisation on interior drawer surfaces, and uneven wear around brass key escutcheons.

A bombe bureau acts as a structural focal point in an entryway, study, or living space when set against neutral plaster or painted walls. The rich wood tones can be balanced by pairing the piece with contemporary abstract art, simple linen curtains, and subtle lighting.

Dusting should be performed with a dry microfibre cloth, followed by an occasional application of natural beeswax polish worked along the grain. To avoid timber warping or veneer lifting, the item must be placed away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas of variable humidity.
