This set of twelve Victorian earthenware dinner plates originates from the 19th century in an English Country House style. Each piece has a cream-coloured background finished with a glossy glaze, complemented by a green seaweed pattern border and a gilt line border along the scalloped rim. The central decoration comprises a hand-painted landscape vignette depicting historic landmarks such as Inverlochy Castle, Barnard Castle, and Bolton Abbey, alongside a black display stand supporting the upright plate in the stack. Additional visible elements include the ribbed moulding around the scalloped edges and the varying scenic depictions across the plates. Each plate measures 2 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Suitable for celebratory occasions and everyday dining, these plates work well when displayed on a sideboard top or laid out on a dining table. They bring historical character and traditional Spode craftsmanship to formal dinner parties, family gatherings, or seasonal events like Christmas. The combination of green botanical motifs and detailed landscape artwork provides an authentic decorative touch for period interiors and collector displays.

Founded in Staffordshire during the late 18th century, Spode transformed British ceramics by refining bone china and perfecting underglaze printing techniques, producing detailed landscape scenes and intricate decorative borders throughout the 19th century.

Plates from this era were typically manufactured from fine earthenware or bone china, decorated using transfer-printed patterns or hand-painted enamel vignettes, and sealed with a protective clear glaze.

Authenticity is verified through maker marks impressed or painted on the reverse, hand-written pattern numbers, visible wear along the foot rim, and natural glaze crazing consistent with age.

Sets of antique plates can be mounted on a dining room wall as a curated gallery arrangement, arranged in a traditional plate rack, or displayed within a glazed cabinet.

Ceramics should be washed by hand using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive cloths, harsh chemicals, and automated dishwashers to protect the original enamel and glaze.
