Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Neoclassical medallion ring handles: fixes the design to after 1780.
Sliding pilaster compartments inside: Dutch cabinet making from the late 18th century.
Bombe lower section with shaped sides: late 18th-century continental commode styling.
Timber shrinkage along the curved cylinder: age showing through centuries of drying.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th-century Dutch marquetry bureau is constructed from dark brown mahogany and fruitwood with brass hardware. The piece presents a cylinder roll-top above three long bombe serpentine-shaped drawers over a curved apron on shaped splayed feet. Detailed floral marquetry inlay decorates the curved cylinder lid, the fronts of the three lower drawers, and the side panels. Ornate brass drop handles and key escutcheons accent the drawer faces. Measuring 113.5 cm high by 124.5 cm wide and 65 cm deep, the bureau provides a substantial workspace and storage option. The traditional form functions well as a statement writing desk or display surface in a study, library, or living room setting.

FAQs

A cylinder bureau is a type of writing desk featuring a solid, curved quarter-cylinder lid that rotates backwards into the carcass to reveal a fitted interior desk area. Popularised in Western Europe during the mid-to-late 18th century, these pieces combine writing functionality with storage drawers underneath.

The main structural carcass was typically crafted from dense woods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Intricate surface patterns were created using contrasting timber veneers like satinwood, boxwood, rosewood, and fruitwoods, complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, irregular hand-sawn veneer thicknesses, and signs of shrinkage along timber joins over time. Inspecting the underside and rear reveals hand-planed secondary timbers like pine or oak, as well as cast brass hardware with historical oxidisation.

A marquetry cylinder bureau serves as a focal piece in a dedicated home office, hallway, or living room space. Positioning the piece against neutral, solid-coloured backdrop walls allows the detailed timber grain and floral inlay work to stand out.

Keep the furniture in an environment with stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement and veneer lift. Clean surfaces using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually to protect the original finish.
