Antique Victorian Carved Oak Stained Glass Bookcase Cabinet C.1890

19th century
Description

A magnificent antique Victorian carved oak bookcase cabinet, dating to circa 1890, of substantial architectural proportions and richly decorated throughout with accomplished carved detail and coloured leaded glass.

The upper section is arranged with three tall glazed doors, each incorporating a grid of individually coloured and textured glass panes. These are framed by deeply carved mouldings, while the broad frieze above is worked with scrolling foliage and classical-inspired ornament, creating an imposing architectural appearance.

The lower cabinet is equally distinctive. Three panelled doors are carved in relief with striking artistic motifs, including a painter’s palette and associated implements, surrounded by finely incised scrolling decoration. Above sit three useful drawers with further carved floral and foliate detail. Internally, the upper section provides generous shelving for books, ceramics or collections, while the lower cupboards offer substantial concealed storage.

Constructed in richly toned oak, the cabinet has developed the depth of colour and character associated with quality late-19th-century furniture. Its scale, craftsmanship and unusual decorative programme give it particular appeal as a statement library, dining-room or drawing-room piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, these bookcases feature robust oak construction, elaborate hand-carved relief panels, and upper glazed doors with leaded or stained glass inserts.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid oak, hand-leaded glass panes, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-carved decorative motifs along the frieze and door panels.

Authentic period pieces show distinct hand-carving irregularities, aged lead cames in the glazing, original hardware fittings, and evidence of natural wood oxidisation in joint seams.

Position the piece against a neutral wall to highlight the dark timber tone, balancing its visual mass alongside contemporary artwork or simplified decorative objects.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, and clean leaded glass panes gently using ammonia-free solutions.
