Extremely Rare Norwegian Solid Silver Viking Ship Boat C1940 Antique 4.5inch

1920 - 1940
Description

A rare good sized Norwegian solid silver Viking ship. It is hallmarked with the 830 standard mark along with the makers mark being that of Brodrene Lohne. I would date it to c1940. It has been beautifully made being in the form of a Viking ship complete with sails. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures approx. 4.5 inches (11.4cm) long by 2.75 inches (7cm) wide by 5.5 inches (14cm) tall and weighs 56 grams. A beautifully made rare example.

This Norwegian solid silver Viking revival decorative object dates from 1940. Modelled in the style of a traditional Viking longship, the piece incorporates a detailed dragon head prow, shield embellishments along the gunwale, sail rigging, and scroll feet supporting the hull from beneath. The miniature vessel measures 11.4 cm long by 7 cm wide by 14 cm tall and weighs 56 grams. It is formed from solid silver with gold gilt highlights and a reflective polished finish, showing a pennant flag flying from the mast and an upright sail filled with wind. Today, this decorative item suits placement within a gentleman's library, sitting comfortably upon a bookshelf or desk. The item requires no assembly and serves entirely as a decorative display piece. The silver metal catches ambient room light while the intricate wire rigging and detailed dragon motifs draw close inspection.

Silver Viking ship miniatures originated in Scandinavia, particularly Norway, as decorative open salts, salt cellars, or display items during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. These objects celebrated Norse heritage, incorporating traditional longship elements such as carved dragon prows, oars, and shield-embellished gunwales.

These miniatures were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or 830 grade silver, which is a standard Scandinavian silver purity. The interior hull was frequently finished with a gold wash (vermeil) to prevent corrosion from salt when used at the dining table.

Authentic Norwegian silver items bear official purity hallmarks, such as 830S or 925S, alongside makers marks from recognized silversmiths. Look for defined repousse metalwork, precise wire rigging, and sturdy structural joins across the hull and mast.

Place the miniature on a dark timber desk, floating shelf, or within a glass cabinet to showcase its metallic finish and intricate profile. Pairing it alongside leather-bound volumes or modern ceramic vessels creates a balanced, curated accent display.

Dust the fine rigging gently with a soft, natural-bristle brush to avoid bending intricate wires. Polish smooth exterior surfaces with a specialised silver dusting cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive creams that can lodge in fine crevices or strip original gilding.
